Let's move on to the next king!
Next up, we have Henry Beauclerc, also known as Henry I. Being the youngest son of William the Conqueror, he was given money but no land. He didn't seem to like that very much, because by hook or by crook, he wound up getting all of it, anyway.
- Was said to be handsome and tall, if a bit cunning.
- Curried favor with both his elder brothers in order to gain political power
- Inherited England after William II died. Though rumors abounded then and now that his brother's death was no accident, Henry was skilled politician and managed to get the most powerful English barons on his side.
- Was said to be voraciously sexual. He married at 31, but was known to have dozens of mistresses, prostitutes, and other women at his beck and call. This was fairly normal for the times, though. He is believed to have sired dozens of bastards.
- Was in nearly constant war with his eldest brother, Robert, but eventually defeated and jailed him, becoming the King of Normandy and parts of Anjou, as well as England.
- Made the office of the exchequer an official position, as well as itinerant judges.
- Had only one legitimate son, William, who got drunk with a bunch of his friends in the middle of the night, ran their boat into a rock, sank into the English Channel, and died.
- Was said to have "never smiled" after his son died, made it known that he wished for his DAUGHTER, Matilda, to inherit his lands after his death.
- Immediately began fighting with his daughter's sons, Henry and Geoffrey, who wanted to inherit the land before Henry I died.
- Had a strange taste for lampreys, and ate them to excess. His doctors warned against it, but he kept eating them anyway. One day, he pretty much GORGED on lampreys, which led to his illness and death.
- His wishes for his daughter to become queen in her own right were, of course, promptly ignored upon his death.
